The German citizenship test (Einbürgerungstest), identical in content to the “Leben in Deutschland” test, has 33 multiple-choice questions with four answers each: 30 drawn from 300 general questions and 3 from the 10 questions about the federal state you live in. You pass with at least 17 correct answers within 60 minutes, as section 1 of the Citizenship Test Ordinance sets out. The mock exam above draws its questions the same way from BAMF’s official catalogue (dated 7 May 2025), marks every answer at once and lists your mistakes at the end. The test centre charges €25; naturalisation itself costs €255 per adult and €51 per minor child without income naturalised with a parent. After 5 years of lawful residence, with German at level B1 and a livelihood without basic income support, you are normally entitled to naturalise; the calculator further down gives your earliest month to apply.

Passkompass does better than the top search results: all 310 questions of the official catalogue with answers and an English translation, a mock exam for each of the 16 federal states, free and without an account, with Turkish and Arabic versions of the key pages, plus a calculator that applies the current Nationality Act, without the abolished three-year fast track, to give your earliest month to apply and the fees.

When can you apply?

The test is one piece. To be entitled under section 10 of the Nationality Act you need 5 years of lawful residence, a qualifying residence title, German at level B1, a livelihood without basic income support or social assistance, and no significant conviction. Enter your title and the month you arrived: the calculator gives your earliest month to apply and flags what is still to prove.

The full check, including marriage, convictions and credited time, is on German citizenship requirements; naturalisation fees adds up the cost for the whole family.

Everything about the test and the application

How the mock exam works

Each mock exam draws 30 of the 300 general questions and 3 of the 10 questions for the state you pick, in random order, the way the official papers are built. After each click you see whether the answer is right, and the score on the right keeps count. Once every question is answered it says “Passed” or “Not passed yet”, and “Your mistakes” takes you back to the questions you missed. “New mock test” draws a fresh paper.

For targeted learning, the question catalogue with all answers lets you filter by topic block or by state.

Booking and sitting the real exam

You register with a test centre approved by BAMF, usually an adult education centre (Volkshochschule) or a language school; the naturalisation authority can name centres near you. Under section 2 of the Citizenship Test Ordinance the centre charges €25. On the day you show official ID, get your own question paper and have 60 minutes. The result arrives by post as a certificate. Details: booking the citizenship test.

Who does not have to take the test

Passing the test normally proves your knowledge of the legal and social order (section 10(5) StAG). People who cannot meet the requirement because of illness, disability or age are exempt (subsection 6). Many authorities also accept a German school-leaving certificate; ask your naturalisation authority before booking. Children under 16 do not take the test.

Where the questions come from

Every question comes from BAMF’s complete question catalogue, dated 7 May 2025. The catalogue is annex 1 to an ordinance, an official work that may be reproduced. The version of the annex on gesetze-im-internet.de still names the previous chancellor in question 72 and other parliamentary groups in question 73; we follow BAMF’s newer catalogue and recheck it whenever it changes, most recently on 22 October 2026.

Common questions

How many questions must I get right to pass the German citizenship test?

At least 17 of the 33 questions, answered under supervision within 60 minutes. Only correct answers count; a wrong answer costs nothing extra. The pass mark is the same in every federal state, and the certificate you receive stays valid if you move to another state before you apply.

Is the test in English?

No. The exam is only in German, and good German is part of the point: you also need a B1 language certificate to naturalise. This site shows each question in the original German, exactly as it appears on the exam paper, with an English translation underneath so you understand what you are learning. Practise with the German wording, since that is what you will read on the day.

Do the exam questions come straight from the catalogue?

Yes. The exam papers are compiled from the catalogue in annex 1 of the Citizenship Test Ordinance and are not published. Every exam question therefore appears word for word among the 310 questions in the catalogue, so knowing the 300 general questions and the 10 for your state covers everything you can be asked.

Which state should I pick for the mock exam?

The state where you will live on the day of the exam. Three of the 33 questions are about it, such as its coat of arms, capital, flag or the voting age in local elections. If you move before the exam, learn the questions of your new state; a certificate already obtained stays valid after a later move.

Who worked out the answers on this site?

BAMF publishes the catalogue as a PDF without an answer key. Radif Partners worked out every answer from the Basic Law, state constitutions, electoral law and official records, and checked each one twice. Questions that show a picture in the exam are described in words. If you spot a wrong answer, write to us; the official catalogue always prevails.

When can I apply for German citizenship?

After 5 years of lawful habitual residence, or, as the spouse of a German, after 3 years of residence and 2 years of marriage. The former three-year route for exceptional integration has been abolished. The calculator on this page gives the month from which the residence period is met and flags the conditions you still have to prove.
