Like Bavaria and Thuringia, Saxony calls itself a Free State, and three of its ten questions appear in the citizenship test. The coat of arms is striped black and gold with a green crancelin, a wreath of rue, and the state flag is white and green. The capital is Dresden, not the larger Leipzig, nor Chemnitz or Zwickau. In municipal elections you can only vote from 18 in Saxony. The state parliament is elected for five years. The Vogtlandkreis is the correct district; Uckermark belongs to Brandenburg, Altötting to Bavaria and Nordfriesland to Schleswig-Holstein. On the map Saxony lies in the south-east, bordering Poland and the Czech Republic. The head of government is the Minister-President, and there is no foreign ministry. Information comes from the state agency for civic education. The arms are easily confused with Saxony-Anhalt’s, which also show the crancelin.

Behind the answers

The Saxon arms go back to the Wettin dynasty. In the test, the black and gold stripes with the green crancelin laid diagonally across them are easily confused with Saxony-Anhalt’s arms, which show the same stripes in their upper part but add an eagle above and a bear on a wall below. Stripes and wreath only: Saxony.

The flag is simply white and green. The capital question is harder, because Leipzig is Saxony’s largest city and features in many history questions through the peaceful revolution of 1989. Parliament and government, however, sit in Dresden on the Elbe.

The Vogtlandkreis lies in the south-west of the state, bordering Bavaria and the Czech Republic. For the voting age, Saxony uses 18; it is one of the states that has not lowered it for municipal elections.

Common questions

Is Leipzig the capital of Saxony?

No, the capital is Dresden. Leipzig is Saxony’s largest city and one of the options in the test, alongside Chemnitz and Zwickau. The state parliament and government, however, are in Dresden. If you know Leipzig from the history questions on the peaceful revolution, do not let that mislead you here.

How do you tell the Saxon arms from Saxony-Anhalt’s?

Both have black and gold stripes with a green crancelin. Saxony’s arms show only that, while Saxony-Anhalt’s add a black eagle above and a black bear on a wall below. In the test, look for animals: no animals means Saxony, animals mean its neighbour.

What colours is the Saxon state flag?

White and green. The other options in the test are blue, white and red; green, white and red; and black and yellow. These two have long been Saxony’s state colours and are unrelated to the colours of the arms. Remember the order as the catalogue gives it: white first.
