Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania lies in the north-east on the Baltic Sea, which is also how the map question in the citizenship test shows it. Three of the state’s ten questions come up in the exam. The coat of arms unites the two parts of the state: a bull’s head for Mecklenburg and a red griffin for Pomerania, on gold and white. The state flag has four colours, blue, white, yellow and red, which makes it easy to recognise. The capital is Schwerin, not the larger Rostock, nor Greifswald or Wismar. The state parliament is elected for five years, and you can vote in municipal elections from 16. The correct district is the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. The head of government is the Minister-President, and there is no foreign ministry. Information comes from the state agency for civic education.

Behind the answers

The state’s name already explains why its arms are divided: it combines Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania, two regions with their own history. The crowned black bull’s head is the old Mecklenburg emblem, the red griffin the Pomeranian one. Other arms in the test show lions or a horse.

The flag is the only one in the catalogue with four colour stripes. Remember that and the question holds no fear: black, red and gold; green, white and red; and black and yellow belong elsewhere.

Schwerin lies in the west of the state and has a palace where the state parliament meets. Rostock is larger and known as a port, and Greifswald and Wismar are old Hanseatic towns. The Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district is named after the region’s many lakes, among them the Müritz.

Common questions

What is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania?

Schwerin. The test offers Greifswald, Schwerin, Rostock and Wismar. Rostock is the largest city in the state, but parliament and government sit in Schwerin, the parliament even in the palace. So tick Schwerin, even if Rostock sounds more familiar to you.

What colours is the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania flag?

Blue, white, yellow and red, four colours in all. That makes the question easy, because no other option in the test has four colours. Black, red and gold is the federal flag, green, white and red belongs to North Rhine-Westphalia, and black and yellow is a decoy.

What does the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania coat of arms show?

A bull’s head and a red griffin on gold and white. The bull’s head stands for Mecklenburg and the griffin for Pomerania, so the arms join the two parts of the state. In the exam it is a picture; here it is described in words. Look for the two different animals.
