If you live in Saxony-Anhalt, three questions about the state appear in the citizenship test. Its coat of arms is the most detailed in the catalogue: striped black and gold with a crancelin, a black eagle above and a black bear on a wall below. The state flag is yellow and black. The capital is Magdeburg, not Halle, Dessau or Wittenberg. The state parliament is elected for five years, and you can vote in municipal elections from 16. The Börde is the correct district; Ammerland is in Lower Saxony, Altötting in Bavaria and Uckermark in Brandenburg. On the map Saxony-Anhalt lies in the middle of the east. The head of government is the Minister-President, and there is no foreign ministry. Information comes from the state agency for civic education. Behind the answers

The arms combine emblems of the former territories. The stripes with the crancelin recall the old Duchy of Saxony, the eagle the Prussian Province of Saxony and the bear on the wall Anhalt. Those animals are exactly what sets them apart from the Free State of Saxony’s arms, which show only stripes and wreath.

For the capital, Halle is the biggest trap, since Halle an der Saale is about as large as Magdeburg. Dessau was the capital of the former state of Anhalt, and Wittenberg is famous for Martin Luther. Parliament and government sit in Magdeburg on the Elbe.

The flag is yellow and black, in that order. The Börde, a district west of Magdeburg, is known for its very fertile soils. Uckermark is a tempting answer because it is also in the east, but it belongs to Brandenburg.

Common questions

Is Halle the capital of Saxony-Anhalt?

No, the capital is Magdeburg. Halle an der Saale is of similar size and one of the options in the test, as are Dessau and Wittenberg. Saxony-Anhalt’s parliament and government sit in Magdeburg. Remember the rivers: Magdeburg is on the Elbe, Halle on the Saale.

Which animals are on the Saxony-Anhalt coat of arms?

A black eagle above and a black bear on a wall below, together with black and gold stripes and a crancelin. That distinguishes it from the Saxon arms, which have no animals. In the exam it appears as a picture; on this site it is described in words.

Which district is in Saxony-Anhalt in the test?
