If you sit the citizenship test in Brandenburg, three questions will be about Brandenburg. The coat of arms shows a red eagle on white, and the state flag is red and white. The capital is Potsdam; the other options are Cottbus, Frankfurt an der Oder and the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which shares the state’s name and is misleading for exactly that reason. The state parliament is elected for five years, and you can vote in municipal elections from 16. Prignitz is the correct district. On the map Brandenburg is the area in the east on the Polish border, surrounding Berlin. The head of government is the Minister-President, and Brandenburg has no foreign ministry either. Information comes from the state agency for civic education. With these answers the three state questions are safe.

Behind the answers

The red eagle is the traditional heraldic animal of the March of Brandenburg. In the exam it appears next to other arms with animals, such as the Berlin bear or the striped Hessian lion. Remember: eagle, red, on white, and the flag repeats these colours.

The capital question has its own trap. The town of Brandenburg an der Havel gave the state its name, but government and parliament sit in Potsdam, close to Berlin. Cottbus and Frankfurt an der Oder are larger towns in the south and east, but neither is the capital.

For the map, picture a ring: Brandenburg wraps around Berlin and reaches the Oder river, the border with Poland, in the east. The Prignitz district lies in the north-west of the state; Vogtlandkreis, Rhein-Sieg-Kreis and Amberg-Sulzbach belong to Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria.

Common questions

Is the town of Brandenburg the capital of the state of Brandenburg?

No. The capital is Potsdam. The town of Brandenburg an der Havel shares the name and is one of the options in the test, but the state parliament and government are not there. Cottbus and Frankfurt an der Oder are also wrong. The answer to tick is Potsdam.

What colours is the Brandenburg flag in the citizenship test?

Red and white. The other options are blue, white and red; green, white and red; and black and yellow. The colours match the coat of arms, a red eagle on a white background. Note the order the catalogue gives; for Berlin it is the other way round, white and red.

Which district is in Brandenburg?

Prignitz. The other options are the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Vogtlandkreis in Saxony and Amberg-Sulzbach in Bavaria. Prignitz lies in north-western Brandenburg between the Elbe and Mecklenburg. If you know the three others, only this answer remains, even without a map.
