Like Bavaria and Saxony, Thuringia is a Free State, and on the map it lies in the centre of the country, towards the east. Three of its ten questions appear in the citizenship test. The coat of arms shows a lion striped red and white with eight white stars on blue, and the state flag is white and red. The capital is Erfurt, not Eisenach, Gera or Jena. The state parliament is elected for five years, and you can vote in municipal elections from 16. The Wartburgkreis is the correct district; Ammerland, Altötting and Nordfriesland belong to other states. The head of government is the Minister-President, and there is no foreign ministry. Information comes from the state agency for civic education. The stars in the arms are what sets Thuringia apart from Hesse’s very similar arms.

Behind the answers

The Thuringian lion is related to the Hessian one; both come from the Landgraves of Thuringia, whose inheritance was divided in the Middle Ages. The eight stars were added later. In the test they decide it: a lion with stars is Thuringia, a lion without stars is Hesse.

The capital question lists four Thuringian towns. Jena is known as a university town, Eisenach for the Wartburg castle, and Gera is one of the larger towns in the east. Parliament and government sit in Erfurt, the state’s largest city.

The Wartburgkreis is named after the Wartburg above Eisenach, where Martin Luther translated the New Testament. If you know that link, the district question is easy too. The map question gets confused with Hesse, which also lies in the centre, but towards the west.

Common questions

What is the capital of Thuringia in the citizenship test?

Erfurt. The test offers Eisenach, Erfurt, Gera and Jena, all Thuringian towns. Jena is known as a university town and Eisenach for the Wartburg castle, but the state parliament and government sit in Erfurt, the Free State’s largest city. Tick Erfurt.

How do you recognise the Thuringian coat of arms?

By the lion striped red and white on blue, surrounded by eight white stars. The Hessian arms also show a striped lion on blue, but without stars. In the exam, that is the difference that matters. On this site the picture is described in words rather than reproduced.

Which district is in Thuringia in the citizenship test?

The Wartburgkreis. The other options are Ammerland in Lower Saxony, Altötting in Bavaria and Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein. The Wartburgkreis lies in western Thuringia around Eisenach and is named after the Wartburg castle. If you know the other three districts, there is no need to guess.
