If you live in Baden-Württemberg, three of the ten questions about your state appear in the citizenship test. They ask about the coat of arms, three black lions one above the other on gold; the state flag in black and gold; and the capital, Stuttgart, offered alongside Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. The state parliament (Landtag) is elected for five years, and in municipal elections you can vote from the age of 16. The government is led by a Minister-President, and the state has no foreign minister, because foreign policy belongs to the federal level. Political information comes from the state agency for civic education. The correct district is the Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis, and on the map Baden-Württemberg is the area in the far south-west bordering France and Switzerland. Know these ten answers and the three state questions are safe.

Behind the answers

Baden-Württemberg was formed in 1952 from three post-war states, yet its coat of arms points to a far older story: the three lions go back to the Hohenstaufen dynasty. In the exam the picture sits next to similar arms of other states, such as Bavaria’s white and blue lozenges. Look at the number of animals and the colours: three, black, on gold.

The capital question is a genuine trap. Karlsruhe is known as the seat of the Federal Constitutional Court, and Mannheim is a large city, but the government and parliament sit in Stuttgart. The flag has only two colours; the three-coloured options belong to other states.

For the district question the name helps: the Neckar river and the Odenwald hills lie in the north of the state. The other options, such as Altötting or Nordfriesland, come from Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein. The minister question follows a pattern shared by all territorial states: there are ministries of justice, finance and the interior, but none for foreign affairs.

Common questions

What is the capital of Baden-Württemberg in the citizenship test?

Stuttgart. The test offers Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Karlsruhe is home to the Federal Constitutional Court and so a popular wrong answer, but Baden-Württemberg’s parliament and government work in Stuttgart, and only that answer is marked correct. Heidelberg and Mannheim are well-known cities in the north of the state.

From what age can you vote in local elections in Baden-Württemberg?

From 16. In elections to municipal and district councils, sixteen-year-olds can vote in Baden-Württemberg. The wrong options 14, 18 and 20 appear for every state. The test only asks about municipal elections, and for Baden-Württemberg 16 is the right answer to tick on the paper.

What does the Baden-Württemberg coat of arms look like?

Three black lions one above the other on a gold background. In the exam it appears as a picture next to the arms of other states. On this site we describe the pictures in words, because the catalogue’s images may not be reused freely. Remember the number three and the colours black and gold.
