Saarland is the smallest territorial state and lies in the far south-west on the French border. The citizenship test asks three questions about it. The coat of arms has four fields: a white lion on blue, a red cross, a red and white diagonal bar and a golden lion on black. The state flag is black, red and gold with the state arms. The capital is Saarbrücken; Neunkirchen, Homburg and Völklingen are wrong. Careful: Neunkirchen appears twice, because in the district question Neunkirchen is the right answer. According to the catalogue, you vote in municipal elections from 18, and the state parliament is elected for five years. The head of government is the Minister-President, and there is no foreign ministry. Information comes from the state agency for civic education.

Behind the answers
Saarland joined the Federal Republic in 1957, later than all the other West German states. Its arms bring together territories that once belonged to different rulers: Nassau-Saarbrücken, Trier, Lorraine and Palatinate-Zweibrücken. In the test it is the only coat of arms with four fields.
Neunkirchen’s double role confuses many people. It is both a town and a district. In the capital question it is wrong; in the district question it is right. Learn the two questions together and the mistake will not happen.
Like Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland uses the federal colours in its flag. On the map you recognise the state by its small area on the French border; the large area next to it in the south-west is Baden-Württemberg.
